Austin-based writer/director Yen Tan recalls the early days of the AIDS crisis with his SXSW Film Festival entry 1985. Adrian, a New York transplant, returns to his Texas hometown to spend the holidays with his parents and his teenage brother Andrew. Still in the closet, Adrian struggles with his inability to tell his family about the condition of his health without first revealing his sexual orientation. 1985 stars Gotham’s Cory Michael Smith as Adrian and Michael Chiklis and Virginia Madsen as Adrian’s religious parents, Dave and Eileen, respectively. 1985 will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 6:30 p.m. March 9 at the Zach Theatre, 6:30 p.m. March 10 at the AFS Cinema, 7:15 p.m. March 13 at the Rollins Theatre at the Long Center, and 9 p.m. March 15 at the Stateside Theatre. The Austin-based Yen Tan previously directed Pit Stop, Ciao, and Happy Birthday as well as the short film The Outfit.
