The Defenders
Do you love a critically decisive or reviled film so much that you must constantly defend its artistic merits to friends and family? If so, Jim Brunzell knows how you feel. His new tseries The Defenders will feature local filmmakers and festival programmers extolling the virtues of their chosen film they hold in high regard that others do not. The catch? The film will remain secret until the start of the screening. The three-film Defenders series will kick off 7:45 p.m. May 31 at the Alamo Drafthouse Mueller with Ping-Pong Summer writer/director Michael Tully. It will continue June 28 with SXSW Senior Film Programmer Jarod Neece and conclude July 25 with Follow writer/director and Master Pancaker Owen Egerton. Jim Brunzell, who also is the program director for the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival, imported his Defenders series from Minneapolis–Saint Paul, where he defended The President’s Analyst. Other films defended included Basic Instinct 2, Chopper, Gentleman Broncos, House, Logan’s Run, Popeye, Real Genius, Reign of Fire, Stunt Rock and Vampire’s Kiss.
