Interview:
Bastian Günther,
writer/director,
"One of These Days"
Inspired by the tragic events surrounding a 2005 “Hands On” contest in Longview, Texas, part-time Austin writer/director Bastian Günther’s One of These Days chronicles the tension that quickly develops between the 20 contestants vying for a new truck in a days-long test of endurance. Günther focuses on Kyle Parsons, a devoted but financially strapped husband and father in desperate need of a new ride. Fortune smiles on Kyle when he is selected to compete for a new truck in a contest that requires him and his opponents to keep their hands on the vehicle for as long as they can. But as the hours stretch into days, Kyle becomes increasingly agitated by the behavior of some of his fellow contestants, most notably that of Kevin, a smart-mouthed irritant out to win the truck by any means necessary. The cast is led by Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London’s Joe Cole as Kyle, The Flight Attendant’s Callie Hernandez as Kyle’s supportive wife Maria, Day 5’s Jesse C. Boyd as Kevin, and Claws and True Blood’s Carrie Preston as Joan Dempsey, the truck dealership’s marketing rep who is constantly trying to keep the peace between contestants. One of These Days will screen at 7 p.m. May 31 and 5 p.m. June 4 at the AFS Cinema with writer/director Bastian Günther in attendance. One of These Days is also now available for digital and on-demand viewing. One of These Days was scheduled to receive its North American premiere during the 2020 SXSW Film Festival before its pandemic-related cancelation. Bastian Günther, who splits his time between Austin and Berlin, previously directed the narrative features Houston and Autopilots as well as the documentary California City. Note: This interview was conducted before the cancellation of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Aired: May 2, 2023.
