Interview:
JJ Perez,
writer/director,
"Beneath"
Gary Gannaway,
writer/producer,
"Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains"
The chillers Beneath and Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains will screen the afternoon of April 6 as a double bill at the City Lights Georgetown during the inaugural GTX Film 2019 Film Festival. Writer/director JJ Perez filmed Beneath at the Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, where he works as a tour guide. The Halloween-set Beneath finds a group of the attraction’s tour guides half-jokingly conducting an ancient Pagan ritual that is intended to summon a malevolent entity known as the Midnight Man. When the ritual works, they scramble to flee the cave before the Midnight Man can claim their souls. Directed by Paulo Biscaia Filho, and mostly shot in Austin, the horror-comedy Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains takes a meta approach to its dissection of low-budget independent filmmaking. A film crew shooting a slasher movie at an old Texas mansion soon discover the location is home to a family of homicidal maniacs that is intent on giving the film a bloody ending. Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains writer/producer Gary Gannaway, a retired adjunct professor in Austin Community College, based his story on his struggles to sell a script with a blockbuster budget. Beneath and Cheerleaders in Chains will screen the afternoon of April 6 as a horror double bill at the City Lights Georgetown during the inaugural GTX Film 2019 Film Festival. Beneath will screen at 1 p.m. and Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains will screen at 2:45 p.m. April 6.
