Interview:
Michael Chernus,
"The Most Hated Woman in America"
Directed by Tommy O’Haver, the Netflix production The Most Hated Woman in America chronicles the 1995 kidnapping and murder of Austin-based atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair and her son and her granddaughter. The founder of American Atheists, O’Hair was the driving force behind the Murray v. Curlett lawsuit, which helped lead to the 1963 Supreme Court ruling that banned Bible reading and prayer in U.S. public schools unconstitutional. Life magazine declared O’Hair ‘The Most Hated Woman in America” in 1964, a year before she moved to Austin. Oscar winner Melissa Leo stars as O’Hair, who was kidnapped in 1995 in Austin with her youngest son Jon and her granddaughter Robin by a former American Atheists, Gary Kerr. A career criminal, Kerr held the three hostage in San Antonio with two associates before their attempts to extort O’Hair resulted in the family’s murder. Josh Lucas stars as Kerr, Michael Chernus stars as Jon Garth Murray, and Juno Temple stars as Robin Murray O’Hair. The Most Hated Woman in America premiered during this year’s SXSW Film Festival and is now streaming on Netflix. Stage actor Michael Churns (above left) appears in Orange Is the New Black as Cal Chapman and will next be seen as the Tinkerer in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Director Tommy O'Haver joins Michael Chernus during this interview.
