Interview:
Bob Ray,
writer/director,
"Rock Opera"
Bob Ray celebrates the 20th anniversary of his Austin-shot music-driven drug caper Rock Opera with a screening at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Austin Film Society’s AFS Cinema. Ray will attend the Rock Opera screening with actor Jerry Don Clark, producer Barna Kantor, and actor/musician/composer Kurtis D. Machler. Rock Opera, which is set against the backdrop of the Austin underground music scene of the late 1990s, stars Clark as Toe, a local musician who sells dirt weed to fund his punk rock band’s upcoming tour. But Toe’s inability to pay off his debts to his drug supplier lands him in a world of trouble. Writer/director Bob Ray contributed a segment to Slacker 2011 and directed the 2007 documentary Hell on Wheels, about the Texas Roller Girls, and 2010 documentary Total Badassabout Austinite and Rock Opera cast member Chad Holt, who died in August 2019. Ray currently is working on a new documentary, I’m With Liberty, about the relationship between Chad Holt and Austin DWI attorney Adam Reposa, whom he worked for as a legal assistant. Ray gained national attention for the short films he made with Adam Reposa between 2012 and 2014.
