"Becoming Bond" Interview
Name your favorite James Bond. Chances are it is Sean Connery or Roger Moore or Daniel Craig. But not George Lazenby. When Connery walked away from the Bond franchise after 1967’s You Only Live Twice, Australian car salesman-turned-model Lazenby talked his way into portraying 007 in 1969’s On Her Majesty Secret Service. While the first non-Connery Bond adventure was a massive hit, Lazenby refused to sign a multi-picture deal to return as the spy and then saw his acting career go downhill. Lazenby’s rise and fall is chronicled in Becoming Bond, a Hulu documentary that features Lazenby recalling the events that led him to Bond and the reason behind his decision to leave the franchise on his own terms. Directed by Josh Greenbaum, Becoming Bond also features reenactments of Lazenby’s life with House of Lies and Superstore cast member Josh Lawson playing the former Bond. Becoming Bond will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 1:45 p.m. March 17 at the Stateside Theatre. Becoming Bond will then debut May 20 on Hulu. Josh Greenbaum previously directed the SXSW Film Festival entry The Short Game. George Lazenby, actor Josh Lawson and director Josh Greenbaum discussed Becoming Bond during the SXSW Film Festival.
