Interview:
Dariusz Wolski,
director of cinematography,
"News of the World"
Almost three decades after transitioning from music videos to films, acclaimed Polish cinematographer Dariusz Wolski has received his first Oscar nomination thanks to his exquisite work in director Paul Greengrass’ post-Civil War western News of the World. Set in Texas, but shot in New Mexico, News of the World also represents the first collaboration between Wolski and Greengrass, who directed Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips and Matt Damon in Green Zone and the last three Jason Bourne films. Hanks stars in News of the World as Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a former member of the Confederate Army who now earns a living reading regional, national, and international news stories to townspeople across Texas. Kidd’s routine is interrupted when he crosses paths with Johanna (newcomer Helena Zengel), a preteen girl kidnapped years earlier by a Native American tribe and raised as their own. The Union Army orders Kidd to take Johanna from Dallas to her surviving family members in San Antonio, a journey Kidd knows will be fraught with danger. News of the World is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD and for digital and on-demand viewing. Dariusz Wolski first film as a cinematographer was director Peter Medak’s 1993’s thriller Romeo Is Bleeding. He remained with Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to shoot On Stranger Tides for director Rob Marshall.
