Interview:
Dan Gilroy,
writer/director,
"Roman J. Israel, Esq."
Written and directed by Nightcrawler’s Dan Gilroy, the legal dramedy Roman J. Israel Esq. stars Denzel Washington as an activist criminal defense attorney whose ethics and idealism are put to the test when he is left without a job following the death of his law partner. Israel swallows his pride to go to work with Colin Farrell’s slick attorney George Pierce at a high-profile law firm. Israel, though, makes a costly career-threatening mistake that leads him down a path he never expected to take as an attorney. Roman J. Israel Esq. marks Dan Gilroy’s follow-up to 2014’s Nightcrawler, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a sociopathic freelance TV cameraman. Gilroy also previously wrote The Fall, Real Steel, and The Bourne Legacy as well as Freejack and Two for the Money, which both starred his wife, Rene Russo. He also co-wrote this year’s blockbuster Kong: Skull Island. Roman J. Israel Esq. premiered locally during this year’s Austin Film Festival and is now in theaters.
