Interview:
Chris Ohlson, producer,
"Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter"
The Coen Brothers classic crime comedy Fargo isn’t a documentary but try telling that to the title character of Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter. The Zellner Brothers’ follow up to 2012’s Kid-Thing, Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter chronicles a Japanese woman’s efforts to escape her ordinary life by finding the suitcase of stolen money Steve Buscemi’s criminal buries toward the end of Fargo. Played by Pacific Rim’s Rinko Kikuchi, Kumiko spends her evenings watching a VHS copy ofFargo as she plans her treasure hunt in the United States. Nathan Zellner wrote Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter with his brother David, who directed the dramedy. Nathan Zellner also produced the film with Chris Ohlson, who also produced the upcoming Austin-shot drama Thank You a Lot. Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Musical Score by the Octopus Project. Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter will screen during the SXSW Film Festival at 1:45 p.m. March 11 and 9 p.m. March 15 at the Paramount Theatre.
