Interview:
Lisa Donato,
director,
"There You Are" and "Foxy Trot"
Directed by Lisa Donato, the Austin-based short films There You Are and Foxy Trot will both screen during this year’s All Genders, Lifestyles and Identities Film Festival. Written by and starring Jen Richards, the touching family drama There You Are focuses on a trans woman who is forced by her parents to wear male clothing when she visits her dying grandmother for the last time. Written by Lisa Donato, the observational comedy Foxy Trot finds a couple (Laura Zak and Elizabeth Frances) enrolling in a ballroom dance class in the hope of bringing some passion back to their marriage. But the lessons only cause more friction between the two women. Lisa Donato, who splits her time between Austin and Los Angeles, previously directed the narrative short Spunkle and the documentary short Reclaiming Pakistan. She also co-wrote the feature film Signature Move, which screened last year’s SXSW Film Festival and aGLIFF. There You Are will screen as part of the Dramatic Shorts program at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Alamo South Lamar. Foxy Trot will screen as part of the Comedy Shorts program at 8 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Alamo South Lamar.
