2020 Texas Film Awards
Presented by the Austin Film Society, the 2020 Texas Film Awards celebrates its 20th anniversary by returning to the Austin Studios for the first time since 2017. The Texas Film Awards will be held 6 p.m. March 12 at the Austin Studios. Parker Posey, who appeared in Austin Film Society founder Richard Linklater’s Dazed & Confused and subUrbia, will emcee the Texas Film Awards. Dallas-raised Kaitlyn Dever, who has starred in Short Term 12, Men, Women & Children, Detroit, Booksmart, and the TV series Last Man Standing and Unbelievable, will receive the Rising Star Award. The Dallas-born Erykah Badu will receive the Soundtrack Award for her contribution to Eve’s Bayou, Blues Brothers 2000, Next Friday, Bamboolzed, Brown Sugar, Sex and the City 2, and the Netflix TV series She’s Gotta Have It. The Texas Film Awards also will honor the Fort Worth-born Shelley Duvall, who starred in The Shining and collaborated with Robert Altman on Brewster McCloud, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, 3 Women, and Popeye. The Houston-shot Brewster McCloudalso will receive the Star of Texas Award, which is given to iconic films shot in the Lone Star State. The Texas Film Awards Star of Texas Award screening of Brewster McCloud will be held 7 p.m. March 11 at the AFS Cinema with stars Shelley Duvall and Michael Murphy in attendance. In addition, the Austin Film Society’s AFS Cinema will serve as a SXSW Film Festival venue from March 14-21. SXSW selections to screen at the AFS Cinema with Austin and Texas ties include Boys State, Bull, The Carnivores, Good Old Girl, Miss Juneteenth, One of These Days, and the TV series Outcry. The Austin Film Society will also present the AFS ShortCase SXSW Community Screening at 2 p.m. March 15.
