The AFS Cinema Reopening,
"Slacker" 30th Anniversary Screening
Sixteen months after it closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Austin Film Society’s AFS Cinema reopens to the public at 100 percent capacity on July 15 with a retrospective screening of director Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show in honor of the late Texas author Larry McMurty as well as Questlove’s new concert film Summer of Soul. The AFS Cinema will also host members-only soft reopening screenings of Piccadilly and The Secret Life of Plantson July 10 and 11, respectively. July and August’s programming is headlined by three major series: The World of Wong Kar Wai, Eric Rohmer’s The Tale of Four Seasons, and The Best of Noir Canon. Despite the reopening of the AFS Cinema, the Austin Film Society will also continue its AFS @ Home Virtual Screening series for the foreseeable future. In addition, the Austin Film Society celebrates the 30th anniversary of founder Richard Linklater’s Slacker with a reunion screening on July 13 at the Paramount Theatre. The Austin Film Society’s Head of Film and Creative Media Holly Herrick will moderate the Slacker 30th anniversary and reunion with Richard Linklater and other cast and crew members
