Interview:
Craig Staggs,
creator,
"EARP"
Forget the Wyatt Earp of Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Tombstone and countless other westerns that recall the heroics of Tombstone’s deputy town marshal. Created by the Austin-based Craig Staggs, the new animated comedy web series EARP deconstructs the mythology surrounding the legendary lawman and the events leading up to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. This is a cowardly Wyatt Earp who is afraid of ducks; remains tormented by the loss of his wife, wrestler Urilla “The Gorilla” Sutherland, years after he death; and requires his good friend Doc Holliday to bail him out of every dangerous situation. EARP recalls in delightfully absurd fashion Earp’s fall and rise in advance of teaming up with Doc Holliday to take on Johnny Ringo and his men on that fateful day in 1881. Craig Stagg not only created EARP but is the voice of the lawman. All seven episodes of the web series is now available for streaming and downloading. Craig Staggs, who worked on Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, is the co-founder of Austin-based animation, illustration, and video production studio Minnow Mountain. He also is the co-producer/animation director of the critically acclaimed Tower, which recalls the horrific UT Tower mass shooting of Aug. 1, 1966.
