Cine Las Americas International Film Festival
Dedicated to bringing films to Austin made by and/or about Latinos or Indigenous peoples of the Americas, the 26th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs May 15-19 at the AFS Cinema. The festival opens May 15 with the Texas music documentary Going Varsity in Mariachi and closes May 19 with The Movie Teller (La contadora de películas), a drama directed by An Education’s Lone Scherfig and starring Bérénice Bejo, Daniel Brühl, and Antonio de la Torre. The festival will also include a selection of competition and non-competition dramas, comedies, thrillers, and sci-fi films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, and the United States. Competion and non-competition documentaries focus on politics, social justice, intergenerational trauma, cultural traditions, and sports. Austin is represented by Iliana Sosa’s La Frontera, her entry in the God Save Texas documentary miniseries inspired by the book by Lawrence Wright and the centerpiece of the made-in-Texas “Hecho en Tejas” sidebar. The “Hecho en Tejas” competition shorts block will screen May 18 at Austin PBS. Panorama Shorts Showcase focuses on films made in the United States and Mexico while the Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase spotlights shorts made by women and non-binary filmmakers from U.S.-Mexico border states. There also will be blocks devoted to narrative, documentary, and student short films as well as music videos. The festival will also include filmmaker Q&As and a closing night gathering.
