Interview: Mike Flanagan,
writer/director, "Oculus"
“Because no one has more thirst for earth, for blood, and for ferocious sexuality than the creatures who inhabit cold manners,” Argentine poet Alejandra Pizarnik said. This holds true in Oculus, director Mike Flanagan’s chiller about a possessed mirror. Doctor Who’s Karen Gillian and Maleficent’s Brenton Thwaites stars as the siblings who set out to prove that the mirror was responsible 10 years earlier for their mother’s murder at the hands of their father. Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff and Dazed and Confused’s Rory Cochrane play the parents. Oculus, which premiered locally at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened April 11, is based on Flanagan’s 2006 short film Oculus: The Man with the Plan.He previously directed the features Makebelieve Still Life, and Absentia.
