"When You Get to the Forest"
With When You Get to the Forest, Austin-based director/animator Eric Power and Salt Lake City-based screenwriter Andreas Petersen transition from the horror comedy of 2020’s Attack of the Demons to the existential magical realism of a hand-cut animated fable about a young woman literally and figuratively lost in a dense but enchanting forest. After hitting the road to run away from all of her problems, Dana (voiced by Alicia Power) stops to go hiking in the same forest she visited as a child with her mother, who remains very much of an influential figure in life. When she inadvertently leaves the trail, Dana finds herself lost in a forest that is home to many magical creatures. She quickly befriends a talking cat, Lakris (voiced by Marcella Campos), while taking up residency in an abandoned cabin. As the seasons begin to pass, Dana cannot help but reflect on her life while forming an unbreakable bond with the forest and its inhabitants. When You Get to the Forest will screen at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline as part of the Alamo Drafthouse’s World of Animation series. Eric Power previously directed and animated 2020’s Attack of the Demons from a script by screenwriter Andreas Petersen. Power also directed and animated the 2013 samurai saga Path of Blood.
