Interview:
Rebecca Ugo,
writer/director,
"No Strings"
Directed by Rebecca Ugo while she was still studying at the University of Texas, the dramedy No Strings finds two UT students engaging in a romantic battle of wits. Ugo’s sister Racheal Ihim stars as Jenny, a survivor of child sex trafficking whose trauma manifests itself in a fear of intimacy, particularly in romantic relationships. This unfairly earns Jenny a reputation at school as being a serial dater who enjoys breaking men’s hearts. Enter Caleb (Daniel Lopez), a university intern counselor tired of listening to Jenny’s ex-boyfriends whine on about how she treated them. So Caleb, unaware of Jenny’s horrific past, plots to put Jenny in her place by pushing her to play him romantically. Representing Rebecca Ugo’s directorial debut, No Strings opened Feb. 12 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin. Rebecca Ugo shot No Strings in and around the University of Texas before she graduated in December 2019 from the Moody College of Communication. Ugo now splits her time between Austin and Dallas, and is developing several directing projects for her company, DEEP Films.
