Interview:
Paul Beck,
Head of Animation,
"A Scanner Darkly"
Richard Linklater’s 2006 adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel A Scanner Darkly married the author’s drug-fueled social allegory with rotoscope animation that vividly brought to life its themes of alienation and paranoia. Keanu Reeves stars as an undercover agent assigned to track down the supplier of a popular hallucinogenic known as Substance D. The cast of this futuristic drama also includes Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson as Reeves’ drug buddies and Winona Ryder as one of his leads. The Austin School of Film presents A Scanner Darkly at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Alamo Drafthouse Mueller. Paul Beck, a head of animation for A Scanner Darkly, will participate in a post-screening Q&A. Beck also worked as an animator on Richard Linklater’s 2001 Waking Life and Keith Maitland’s 2016 Tower. The Austin School of Film's Education & Programming Director Faiza Kracheni joins Paul Beck during this interview.
