Interview:
Alexandre O. Philippe,
director,
"Memory: The Origins of Alien"
Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, the Fantastic Fest documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien examines the childhood experiences, personal concerns, and creative influences that led Dan O'Bannon to write the classic 1979 sci-fi chiller Alien. The documentary takes its title from Memory, an earlier incomplete script by O'Bannon that laid the foundations for Alien. Philippe also focuses on the importance of the collaborations between O'Bannon, director Ridley Scott, and artist H.R. Giger, and details the behind-the-scenes efforts to film Alien's signature chest-burster scene. Philippe previously directed the film-themed documentaries The People vs. George Lucas, Doc of the Dead, 78/52: Hitchcock's Shower Scene, and the upcoming Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist. Memory: The Origins of Alien will screen 11 a.m. Sept. 22 and 2 p.m. Sept. 25 during Fantastic Fest. Memory: The Origins of Alien also will be available on VOD beginning Oct. 4.
