Interview:
Juan Pablo González,
director,
"Caballerango"
Directed by University of Texas graduate Juan Pablo González, the documentary Caballerango expands upon the themes of death, memory and identity González explored in his 2015 Slamdance Film Festival-winning short The Solitude of Memory. With Caballerango, González takes us back to his childhood hometown of Milpillas, in the Mexican municipality of Atotonilco, to further examine the aftermath of the suicide of his friend Fernando “Nando” Bolanos and the grief experienced by the horse wrangler's family. González also places Nando’s suicide within the context of a spate of suicides by young people in the rural town. Caballerango will screen 3:30 p.m. June 2 at the AFS Cinema as part of the Austin Film Society’s Doc Days series. Juan Pablo González, who is now based in Los Angeles but will attend the Doc Days screening, also directed two documentary shorts, 2016’s La Aspera (The Wait) and 2017’s Las Nubes.
