This year's ATX Television Festival paid tribute to The Simpsons with a panel that featured creator/writer/EP James L. Brooks, writer/producer Matt Selman, showrunner Al Jean director/producer David Silverman reminiscing about the show’s long and storied history. James L. Brooks also received the festival’s ATX Achievement in Television Excellence Award. Showrunner Al Jean joined The Simpsons in 1989 as one of its first writers. He remained with the show through its fourth season before leaving to co-create the short-lived primetime animated series The Critic, which featured Jon Lovitz as the voice of film critic Jay Sherman. Jean returned to The Simpsons in 1998 for the show’s 10th season and was named showrunner in 2001 at the start of the show’s 13th season. He also was one of the writers of 2007’s The Simpsons Movie.
