ATX Television Festival's ATX TV ... From the Couch
ATX Television Festival is coming to a small screen near you. Instead of canceling this year’s ATX Television Festival when the coronavirus pandemic hit, co-founders/co-executive directors Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland made the swift decision in March to turn the ninth annual celebration of television shows new, current, and old into a live streaming event. The ATX TV … From the Couch virtual festival will stream live Friday through Sunday at https://youtube.com/atxfestival, with required registration open to everyone in and outside of Austin at Eventbrite so devourers of television nationwide can enjoy the conversations, panels, and series retrospectives from the comfort of their home. The virtual festival’s opening night features a marquee conversation with the cast and creators of the new HBO drama series Perry Mason, with stars Matthew Rhys, Tatiana Maslany, and John Lithgow scheduled to participate. HBO and its new streaming service HBO Max also will be represented by a Search Party table read and panels devoted to or featuring creatives and talent from A Black Lady Sketch Show, I’ll Be Gone In the Dark, I May Destroy You, Legendary, and Room 104. Peacock, the upcoming NBCU streaming service, will make its ATX Television Festival debut with panels devoted to Psych TV movie Psych 2: Lassie Come Homeand the OneChicago franchise. The Mandalorian executive producer/writer Jon Favreau, writer Dave Filoni, and Season 1 directors Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi will participate in Behind the Camera panel of the Disney+ Star Wars TV series. There also will be panels devoted to such current and new shows as Barkskins, The Bold Type, Little Fires Everywhere, Nancy Drew, New Amsterdam, One Day at a Time, Outcry, P-Valley, and The Good Lord Bird with Ethan Hawke. Cougar Town, Scrubland and Justified will receive virtual series retrospectives. The ATX TV … From the Couch virtual festival also will include panels looking back at shows cancelled in 2020 and present conversations on producing television post-COVID-19, mental health and addiction storylines, voter suppression and election year issues, and authentic Latinx stories. For those who planned to attend this year’s ATX Television Festival in person, festival organizers are already working on rolling over many of this year’s highlights to 2021, including live retrospectives and reunions of Cougar Town, Justified, Oz, Parenthood, and Scrubs.
