The Austin Film Society's celebrates Valentine's Day with the Love Month series, featuring The Young Girls of Rochefort, The Scent of the Green Papaya, Brief Encounter, and Show Me Love. The Century of Sembène series, devoted to Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène, features Black Girl (paired with the short film Borom Sarrett), Emitaï, Xala, and Ceddo. The 2X Wim Wenders selections Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas lead into the Feb. 15 opening of the director's Oscar-nominated character study Perfect Days. Other new releases include Tótem, with writer/director Lila Avilés in attendance for a post-screening Q&A after the 3:45 p.m. Feb. 3 showing. Experimental Response Cinema returns its anti-Valentine's Day program "Love Hangover." Retrospective screenings include Black God, White Devil, Household Saints, Local Hero, My Own Private Idaho, Nostalghia, the Fright Club selection Eyes Without a Face, and the Lates selections Totally F***ed Up, Sitcom, and Lovers of the Arctic Circle. Documentaries include Robert Irwin: A Desert of Pure Feelings and Breaking the News, about the Austin-based media outlet The 19th*. The Queer Cinema: Lost & Found series brings Leather, Dykes, and Sadomasochism to the AFS Cinema.
