Interview:
David Gordon Green, director, "Joe"
Shot in and around Austin by director David Gordon Green, the drama Joe focuses on the relationship between a lumber company tree poisoner and the teenager he takes under his wing. Nicolas Cage plays Joe, the hard-working, hard-drinking ex-con who constantly finds himself in trouble with the law. Tree of Life and Mud’s Tye Sheridan plays Gary, the teenager who quickly comes to view Joe as a father figure. Based on the novel by Larry Brown, Joe also stars such prominent Austin actors as Jonny Mars, Adrienne Mishler, and Heather Kafka. Green also cast homeless Austinite Gary Poulter as Wade, Gary’s physically abusive father. Poulter died under tragic circumstances in February 2013, two months after completing Joe. Prior to moving to Austin, David Gordon Green directed the indie dramas George Washington, All the Real Girls, Undertow, and Snow Angels and the studio comedies Pineapple Express, Your Highness and The Sitter. Green previously directed last year’s dramedy Prince Avalanche in Austin, and he’s already followed up Joe with the third film he's shot locally, Manglehorn, with Al Pacino and Holly Hunter. Green will next direct the Texas border thriller The Line. Joe premiered locally at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened April 11 in Austin. It also will be available on VOD and iTunes. Director David Gordon Green and stars Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan participated in a press conference before Joe screened during the SXSW Film Festival.
