"Song of the Cicada"
Directed by cousins Aaron Weiss and Robert Weiss, Song of the Cicada offers an intimate portrait of Galveston mortician Dale Carter. Shot over the course of a decade, the death-positive documentary chronicles the childhood experiences that led the colorful Carter to seek out a career as a mortician while attempting to demystify the embalming process used by Carter and his colleagues to preserve the human body for viewing in advance of burial or cremation. The documentary also finds Carter dealing with personal crisis related to his Victorian home in Galveston and a historic home in Beaumont he plans to restore. Song of the Cicada will screen at 3 p.m. Oct. 30 at the State Theatre and 4 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin during the Austin Film Festival.
