"The Devil's Candy"
Satan has a sweet tooth, and he’s come to Austin to fulfill his cravings. In Australian director Sean Byrne’s Austin-shot The Devil’s Candy, the Hellman family moves into the farmhouse of their dreams only to come under threat by the seemingly possessed son of the previous owners. Making matters worse: artist Jesse Hellman (Ethan Embry) begins to alienate himself from his wife Astrid (Shiri Appleby) and their daughter Zooey (Kiara Glasco) as his paintings take on a dark and horrifying nature. His obsession with his newfound subject matter prevents him from protecting his family from the malevolent Ray Smile (Pruitt Taylor Vince). The Devil’s Candy plays out against a heavy metal soundtrack that not only helps to inform the proceedings but subverts the way the musical genre is typically used in horror films. The Devil’s Candy, which premiered locally during the 2015 Fantastic Fest, opened March 31 in Austin and is also available on VOD. Sean Byrne previously directed The Loved Ones, which screened during the 2012 SXSW Film Festival.
