"School of Rock"
The Austin Film Society will celebrate the 10th anniversary of director Richard Linkletter’s School of Rock with a special screening at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Paramount Theater. Linklater, screenwriter Mike White, stars Jack Black and Miranda Cosgrove, and members of the “School of Rock” band will participate in the 10th anniversary reunion screening and party. Released in 2003, School of Rock stars Jack Black as Dewey Finn, a penniless musician who pretends to be his roommate so he can work as a substitute teacher at a snooty private elementary school. Bored with the curriculum, Dewey forms a class band with some of his musically inclined students. The remaining students serving as back-singers, roadies, technical crew, and security. A pre-iCarly Miranda Cosgrove plays the band manager. Actor/writer/director Mike White wrote School of Rock with Black in mind, having lived next door to him and worked with him on the 2002 comedy Orange County. He also costars in School of Rock as Dewey’s harried roommate, Ned Schneebly. White previously enjoyed critical acclaim as the star and writer of Chuck & Buck. He also wrote The Good Girl and directed Year of the Dog, and would go on to co-write Nacho Libre for Black. White also created the recent HBO series Enlightened with Laurie Dern.
