"Blindspotting"
A collaboration between childhood friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, the dramedy Blindspotting examines how gentrification has transformed Oakland into a city that does not quite resemble the one that the California natives knew growing up. Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs stars as Colin, a convicted felon with three days left on probation. Complicating matters: Colin witnesses an unjustified shooting of an African-American man by a white police officer (Ethan Embry). Meanwhile, Colin’s friend Miles (Rafael Casal) struggles to make ends meet, and to provide adequate preschool education for his young son Sean, in an ever-changing Oakland that no longer feels like his home of old. Oakland native Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal wrote Blindspotting, which marks the directorial debut of Carlos López Estrada. Blindspotting premiered locally during this year’s SXSW Film Festival and is now playing in Austin.
