"GLOW"
In the new 1980s-set Netflix comedy series GLOW, Community’s Alison Brie stars as a struggling actress who is so desperate for work that she auditions for the role of a wrestler in a TV show called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. When Ruth and her best friend and fellow actress Debbie (Nurse Jackie’s Betty Gilpin) have a very loud falling out during tryouts, they are both cast in the show, Ruth as the villainous Zoya the Destroya and Debbie as the heroic Liberty Belle. Marc Maron stars as the show’s acerbic director Sam Sylvia. Liz Flahive, the producer of Nurse Jackie, created GLOW with Carly Mensch after they watched the 2012 documentary GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which chronicled the history of the all-female wresting TV show that ran from 1986 through 1990. GLOW, which is now streaming on Netflix, premiered locally during this year’s ATX TV Festival. GLOW creator Liz Flahive and cast members Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin spoke with media prior to the ATX TV Festival.
