SXSW Film & TV Festival
This year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival runs March 10-18 at various Austin venues. The festival opens March 10 with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Bottoms, Evil Dead Rise, Flamin' Hot, Problemista, Joy Ride, and Tetris round out the headliners. The Closing Night Film will be announced closer to the festival. Other prominent narrative features across several programs include Blackberry, If You Were the Last, Self Reliance, Talk to Me, Theater Camp, The Young Wife, and You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder. Documentaries include Art for Everybody, Being Mary Tyler Moore, Black Barbie: A Documentary, A Disturbance in the Force, The Herricanes, The Lady Bird Diaries, Little Richard: I Am Everything, Love To Love You, Donna Summer, Satan Wants You, STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie, and You Can Call Me Bill. Austin is represented by Julio Quintana’s The Long Game, the Paper Street Pictures production The Artifice Girl, and the HBO Max miniseries Love & Death. TV premieres include American Born Chinese, Beef, Lucky Hank, Mrs. Davis, Rabbit Hole, Shatter Belt, A Small Light, and Swarm. Remaining selections will screen and/or stream as part of SXSW’s traditional programs of Narrative Feature Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Narrative Spotlight, Documentary Spotlight, Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Global, Visions, 24 Beats a Minute, Episodic Premieres and Pilots, XR Experiences Competition and Spotlight, and narrative, documentary, animated, midnight, Texas, and Texas high school shorts packages. The SXSW Conference, which runs March 10-14, features film and TV panels, discussions, and conversations. Keynote speakers include Tilda Swinton and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. This year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival marks the first overseen by new VP, Film & TV Claudette Godfrey, who inherited the role last year from Janet Pierson. Godfrey first joined SXSW in 2007 in the role of Film Technical Coordinator Assistant and then rejoined as Short Film Programmer & Film Festival Coordinator, Short Film Programmer & Operations Manager, and Senior Film Programmer before being named Director of Film Festival Programming in January 2022 under Janet Pierson.
