50 Annual Paramount Summer Classic Film Series
If the Paramount Theatre shines like gold between now and the beginning of September, it is because Austin’s historic venue and its adjacent State Theatre are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Paramount Summer Classic Film. Festivities kick off May 24 with a 35mm double bill of perennial favorite Casablanca and Top Hat—which opened the series in 1975—followed on May 25 by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s Avenue of Paramount Stars ceremony and a screening of Sin City with Rodriguez and cast member Alexis Bledel in attendance. Star Wars and Brian De Palma’s The Phantom of the Paradise will screen on May 26, while the Italian prog rock band Goblin will perform the score of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead on May 27. Other special events include a June 8 double bill of Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble with filmmaker John Waters in attendance. Robert Rodriguez will return to the Paramount to present his second annual series of personal favorites, while the Austin Film Society, the Austin Asian-American Film Festival, the Austin Public Library and BookPeople, and the Hyperreal Film Club will partner with the Paramount on series throughout the summer. The Paramount will also present series devoted to Alfred Hitchcock, author/screenwriter Larry McMurtry, ensemble films, family films, film noir, franchises, musicals and music-themed films, road trips, and international romances. The series will end with the post-pandemic return of 70MM Week, featuring The Searchers, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Streets of Fire.
