"Queens of Pain"
Directed by Austin-based sisters directors Cassie Hay and Amy Winston, Queens of Pain offers an insider’s guide to the Gotham Girls Roller Derby League. The documentary examines what it takes physically and mentally to make it in the sport through portraits of three New York skaters: Queens of Pain veteran Suzy Hotrod, the face of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby League; Evilicious, a new mother trying to regain her roller derby shape to retain her position on the Brooklyn Bombshells; and Captain Smack Sparrow, a roller derby newcomer struggling to juggle her commitments to her family, her job, and the draft and development team the Diamond District. Queens of Pain will stream during the 2020 virtual Austin Film Festival, which runs Oct. 22-29. Cassie Hay, a former skater with the Queens of Pain, previously directed the 2016 documentary The Liberators. Amy Winston makes her transition from advertising to filmmaking with Queens of Pain.
