Interview:
Emerald Fennell,
writer/director,
"Saltburn"
Written and directed by Promising Young Woman Oscar winner Emerald Fennell, the biting social satire Saltburn takes aim at the class system in the United Kingdom. Barry Keoghan stars as Oliver Quick, a first-year scholarship student at Oxford University. Initially viewed as a social outcast, Oliver lucks into striking up a friendship with the handsome and charismatic Felix Catton, who not only happens to be the most popular student at Oxford University but comes from a British aristocratic family with powerful connections. At the end of the school year, Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at the family estate, Saltburn. While Felix’s family seemingly welcomes Oliver with open arms, Oliver quickly finds himself out of place in a world of immense wealth and power. So he endeavors to take full advantage of his time at Saltburn before he outstays his welcome. Saltburn also stars Jacob Elordi as Felix, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant as Oliver’s parents, Alison Oliver as Oliver’s sister Venetia, and Gran Turismo’s Archie Madekwe as Felix’s snooty cousin Farleigh, who can’t help but view Oliver with a suspicious eye. Saltburn, which served as one of this year’s Fantastic Fest secret screenings and opened this year’s Austin Film Festival, opened Nov. 17 in Austin. Emerald Fennell made her directorial debut with the 2019 drama Promising Young Woman, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Fennell also wrote episodes of the TV series Killing Eve and Drifters. She also appeared in the Britcom Call the Midwife and played Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown. This past summer, Fennell starred as Midge in Barbie. Aired: Nov. 15, 2023 Web sites: https://www.originalmovies.amazon/saltburn/ https://www.facebook.com/amazonstudios |
