James Neal Bond,
documentary subject,
"The Other Fellow"
What would you do if you shared the same name as film and literature’s most famous spy? Would you legally change your birth name of James Bond or use some variation of it to avoid a lifetime of 007 jokes? With his documentary The Other Fellow, director Matthew Bauer talks with multiple James Bonds about the positive and the negative impact of being named after the secret agent with a license to kill. He even talks with four generations of James Bonds from in and around the Austin area including ex-pastor and former Cedar Creek resident James Neal Bond, who was born in 1953, the same year Ian Fleming published his first James Bond novel "Casino Royale." Bauer also talks with Sweden’s Gunnar James Bond Schäfer, who added “James Bond” to his legal name because of his childhood affinity with MI5’s most lethal weapon. The Other Fellow screens 5 p.m.Oct. 28 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin during the Austin Film Festival. The Other Fellow represents Matthew Bauer’s directorial debut. Aired: Oct. 25, 2022.
