Interview:
T.J .Masters, Conveyor,
"THX 1138"/"Prime" Live Score
With a clear nod to George Orwell’s 1984, George Lucas’ austere directorial debut THX 1138 focused on the efforts of Robert Duvall’s eponymous worker to free himself of the drugs, sexual restrictions, and religious and pro-consumerism messages that the state force upon the masses to increase workplace productivity and efficiency. Lucas may have helped ushered in the blockbuster era with Star Wars but THX 1138 continues to influence filmmakers today despite failing to connect with audiences during its 1971 release. The haunting imagery, the stark atmosphere and/or the themes explored in Lucas’ chilling view of a dystopian future can be seen in everything from Dark Star to Logan’s Run to Dark City to The Matrix to Beyond the Black Rainbow and, most recently, The Signal. THX 1138 also led to “Prime,” the new album by the New York-based band Conveyor that will be released July 15. “Prime” features music that Conveyor composed to and performed alongside THX 1138. The band will perform its live score to THX 1138 at 7 p.m. July 3 at the Alamo Ritz.
