Interview:
Parker Finn,
writer/director,
"Smile"
Writer/director Parker Finn received in 2020 the SXSW Film Festival Midnight Short Special Jury Recognition Prize for Laura Hasn't Slept, a psychological chiller about a young woman in therapy for a narrowing recurring nightmare. So it was only appropriate that Finn’s directorial debut Smile, a trauma-driven horror film inspired by Laura Hasn't Slept, received its world premiere in Austin during last month’s Fantastic Fest. In Smile, psychologist Dr. Rose Cotter (Mare of Easttown's Sosie Bacon) begins to experience terrifying hallucinations just hours after witnessing a new patient commit suicide. Haunted by the disturbing smile left on her patient’s face, Rose sets out to investigate a series of similar suicides while trying to maintain her grip on reality. Smile costars Jessie T. Usher as Rose’s disbelieving fiancé Trevor, Kyle Gallner as Rose’s concerned ex-girlfriend and homicide detective Joel, Robin Weigert as Rose’s therapist Dr. Madeline Northcott, and Caitlin Stasey, who reprises her character of Laura Weaver from Laura Hasn't Slept. Smile opened Sept. 30.
