Shorts Showcase 2023
![]() The Shorts Showcase 2023 represents the first joint collaboration between initiating organization Indie Meme, the All Genders, Lifestyles and Identities Film Festival (aGLIFF), the Austin Asian American Film Festival, the Austin Jewish Film Festival, and the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival. Scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at the AFS Cinema, the showcase features a short film selected by each festival that reflects its mission and commitment to their filmmakers it serves. Indie Meme’s selection, Khaula Malik’s documentary There Was Nobody Here We Knew, focuses on a Pakistani couple in northern Virginia in quarantine during the early weeks of the pandemic. aGLIFF’s selection, Austin-based writer/director Maggie Burger’s horror short Cleanse, chronicles the efforts of an energy healer to save a young woman from an unseen force of evil. The Austin Asian American Film Festival’s selection, Akira Morita’s documentary Year of the Rabbit, offers a portrait of Kong Sovannaro, a deaf tuk-tuk driver in Cambodia. The Austin Jewish Film Festival’s selection, Desiree Abeyta’s race-themed drama Anne, finds two actresses—one white, one black—auditioning for the role of Anne Frank. The Cine Las Americas International Film Festival’s selection, Austin-based writer/director Alexander Rosales’ drama Tejano Night, follows a young Mexican-American man’s cultural identity crisis.
