December 2017 Programming
Lead Film Programmer Lars Nilsen previews the Austin Film Society December 2017 programming at the AFS Cinema. The month kicks off with a bang on Dec. 2 with The Mexico Trilogy, with writer/director Robert Rodriguez celebrating the 25th anniversary of El Mariachi with a screening of his influential micro-budget action film and its sequels Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The AFS will pay tribute to the late documentarian Les Blank on Dec. 3 with separate programs devoted to his films about "Food" and "Music." On Dec. 23, the AFS will screen writer/director Tom Schiller's unreleased 1984 comedy Nothing Lasts Forever, which features a cast headed by Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. Continuing series include "UCLA Festival of Preservation, "Essential Cinema: Patricia Highsmith," and Richard Linklater's 1980s-themed "Jewels in the Wasteland. The "Home for the Holidays" series focuses on classic Christmas films from the 1930s and 1940s.
