"The Amazing Johnathan Documentary Interview"
Directed by Benjamin Berman, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary initially begins as an intimate portrait of dying stand-up comedian/magician John Edward Szeles. He was diagnosed in 2007 with a heart condition and, despite announcing in 2014 he had one year left to live, remains alive but still in fragile health. The documentary opens in 2017 with The Amazing Johnathan deciding to come out of retirement for a series of shows across the country. So far, so good. But a disheartening discovery by Berman forces the first-time documentary director to make himself as much as a subject of his work as The Amazing Johnathan. The Amazing Johnathan Documentary will screen 8:45 p.m. May 31 at the AFS Cinema as part of the Austin Film Society’s Doc Days series. Director Benjamin Berman, who will attend the Doc Days screening, works in fictional comedy, having directed such shows as Tim and Eric Nite Live, Jon Benjamin Has a Van, On Cinema, Workaholics, Comedy Bang! Bang!, and Lady Dynamite. The Amazing Johnathan Documentary will debut Aug. 16 on Hulu.
