![]() On Aug. 1, 1966, when Charles Whitman positioned himself at the top of the University of Texas Tower and killed 16 people and wounded 33 others over the course of 90-plus minutes. Austin-based director Keith Maitland’s SXSW award-winning documentary Tower vividly recalls the shooting through rotoscoped animated reenactments and survivor and eyewitness interviews. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the shooting, the documentary will screen 4:25 p.m. July 31 at the Bullock Museum IMAX Theater and will be followed by a post-screening Q&A with director Keith Maitland, producer Megan Gilbride, co-producer/animation director Craig Staggs, executive producer Pamela Colloff and shooting survivors and eyewitnesses. Tower is scheduled to open Oct. 21 in Austin. Co-producer/animation director Craig Staggs, who worked on Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, is the co-founder of Austin-based animation, illustration, and video production studio Minnow Mountain.
