Interview:
Gigi Saul Guerrero,
co-writer/director,
"Into the Dark: Culture Shock"
Streaming on Hulu as part of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark anthology series of holiday-themed chillers, the Gigi Saul Guerrero-directed scathing cautionary tale Culture Shock takes its inspiration from the Trump administration’s inhumane treatment of migrants who illegal cross the border into the United States. In the Independence Day-inspired Culture Shock, pregnant border crosser Marisol (Altered Carbon and Queen of the South’s Martha Higareda) undertakes the dangerous journey from Mexico to the United States no just in pursuit of the American Dream but in search of the father of her unborn child. But Marisol’s arrival in the United States on the eve of the Fourth of July is not quite as hostile as she expected. Which immediately arouses Mariso’s suspicions. Culture Shock also stars The X-Men franchise’s Shawn Ashmore, horror icon Barbara Crampton, and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ Richard Cabral. Into the Dark: Culture Shock premiered during this year's ATX Television Festival and will debut July 4 on Hulu. Culture Shock is the 10th of 12 films in the monthly Into the Dark series Blumhouse produces for Hulu. Other Into the Dark entries include Nacho Vigalondo’s Pooka, Sophia Takal’s New Year, New You, and Chelsea Stardust’s All That We Destroy. Culture Shock marks the first feature film from Mexican-Canadian filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero. She previously transition from directing genre shorts—including the 2015 Fantastic Fest selection El Gigante—to the 2017 television horror series La Quinceañera. She also contributed to The ABCs of Death 2.5, which counts the Austin-based Tim League among its executive producers.
