20th Anniversary of Austin Studios
Operated by the Austin Film Society, Austin Studios celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The 20-acre production complex, which sits on the location of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, includes two sound stages and two flex spaces. Austin Studio is currently embarking on a project to convert the former National Guard Armory into the Creative Media Center, which would include the 13,775-square-foot Stage 7 and 15,000 square feet of office space. Films that have shot at Austin Studios include Alita: Battle Angel, Friday the 13th, Idiocracy, The Life of David Gale, Machete, Miss Congeniality, The Rookie, A Scanner Darkly, Secondhand Lions, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, Stop-Loss, True Grit, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and Robert Rodriguez's upcoming We Can Be Heroes. TV shows include The Lying Game, Rollergirls, and Amazon's upcoming Panic. Tenants at Austin Studios include Rooster Teeth. The Austin Film Society’s 20th Anniversary of Austin Studio series at the AFS Cinema begins 7 p.m. Feb. 15 with Idiocracy, continues 7 p.m. Feb. 22 with Miss Congeniality, and ends 7 p.m. Feb. 29 with Machete. Also, the Austin Film Society’s Texas Film Awards returns to Austin Studios at 6 p.m. March 12 for the first time since 2017.
