Interview:
Jon Reish,
FX technical director/
effects supervisor,
"The Good Dinosaur"
What if dinosaurs were not extinct? And man did not evolve into Earth’s dominant species? That’s the question posed by Pixar Animation Studios’ new adventure The Good Dinosaur, which opened Nov. 25. The Good Dinosaur focuses on the unusual relationship between an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa) and his caveboy companion, Spot (Jack Bright). The voice cast also includes Sam Elliott, Anna Paquin, Steve Zahn, Jeffrey Wright, and Frances McDormand. The Good Dinosaur was originally scheduled to open in May 2014 but was delayed by more than a year when Pixar removed co-director/co-writer Bob Peterson from the project for creative reasons. Co-director Peter Sohn oversaw an overhaul of The Good Dinosaur, which included replacing its voice cast. The Good Dinosaur FX Technical Director/Effects Supervisor Jon Reish met with members of the Austin media in October to discuss the changes made to film during its prolonged production, the animation sequences he worked on, and Pixar’s upcoming slate of films. A Texas A&M University alumni, Reish previously worked as the effects supervisor of Monsters University and an effects artist on Cars, Ratatouille, and Up.
