Created by the Houston-born Chad Feehan, the Fort Worth-shot miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves chronicles the life and career of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. The miniseries opens with the enslaved Bass Reeves—played by David Oyelowo—forced to fight in the Civil War for the Confederate Army by his master Col. George R. Reeves. Upon returning to his master’s Texas plantation, Reeves escapes to his native Arkansas and becomes a freedman. In Episode 2, Dennis Quaid’s Deputy U.S. Marshal Sherrill Lynn recruits Reeves to uphold the law in the Indian Territory. Episodes 3 and 4 focus on Reeves’ early accomplishments carrying the weight of the badge, solidifying him “the most earnest man” Lynn has ever met. The miniseries costars Lauren E. Banks as Bass’ wife Jennie, Shea Whigham as Col. George R. Reeves, Donald Sutherland as the infamous “Hanging Judge” Isaac Charles Parker, and Barry Pepper as Esau Pierce, the leader of the Confederate States Army regiment the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles. Executive produced by Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan, and intended to launch a new anthology series, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is now available to stream on Paramount+. The Houston-born Chad Feehan, who also lived in Fort Worth, previously wrote for the TV series Southland, Rectify, Banshee and Banshee Origins, and Ray Donovan.
