"Seadrift"
Directed by former Austinite Tim Tsai, Seadrift examines the tension that arose the between the white residents of Seadrift and the Vietnamese refugees who settled in the Texas Gulf Coast commercial fishing town in the late 1970s. The documentary recalls the disturbing events that led to the 1979 fatal shooting of Billy Joe Aplin by Sau Van Nguyen, resulting in the KKK’s arrival to a town struggling to find its new identity. Seadrift will screen at 6 p.m. June 14 at the AFS Cinema during this year’s Austin Asian American Film Festival. Seadrift represents the feature documentary directorial debut of the Austin Asian American Film Festival interim executive director and board member Tim Tsai.
