Interview:
Jenny Slate, "Obvious Child"
In writer/director Gillian Robespierre’s comedy Obvious Child, Jenny Slate stars as pregnant stand-up comedian Donna Stern, whose love life becomes increasingly complicated in the weeks leading up to her scheduled abortion. Max (The Office’s Jake Lacey) is responsible for Donna’s unplanned pregnancy, and while he’s supportive of her decision to have an abortion, she’s unsure whether she wants him back in her life romantically so soon after their one-night stand. The film also stars David Cross as one of Donna’s friends and Polly Draper and Richard Kind as Donna’s parents. Now playing in Austin, Obvious Child is based on Robespierre’s 2009 short film that starred Slate before she joined Saturday Night Live for one brief season. In addition to Obvious Child, Slate has appeared in the films Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and This Means War and the TV shows Bored to Death, House of Lies, Kroll Show, Parks and Recreation, and the upcoming Married. I spoke with Obvious Child star Jenny Slate after the comedy premiered locally at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
