Directed by Sonia Kennebeck, the SXSW Online documentary United States vs. Reality Winner chronicles the events leading up to and after Texas native Reality Winner's 2017 leaking of an National Security Agency classified document to The Intercept about how the Russians interfered with the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Kennewick details the U.S. government's investigation and the subsequent plea deal that sent the intelligence contractor to federal prison in Fort Worth for 63 months followed by three years of probation. She includes interviews with Reality Winner's family, The Intercept editor-in-chief Betsy Reed, and intelligence contractor and whistle blower Edward Snowden. The documentary also includes the previously unheard audio of the 2017 FBI interrogation of Reality Winner, which Kennebeck sued to obtain and only received in February 2021. United States vs. Reality Winner continues the series of documentaries about whistle blowers by by Sonia Kennebeck that began with National Bird and Enemies of the State.
