Interview:
Brian Helgeland,
writer/director,
"Legend"
After chronicling Jackie Robinson’s efforts to break down baseball’s racial barriers, 42 writer/director Brian Helgeland turns his attention to the less-than-noble endeavors of Reggie and Ronnie Kray, the British identical twin gangsters who were both the toast of and the scourge of London during the 1960s. Tom Hardy assumes the dual roles of the disciplined Reggie and the psychotic Ronnie. The cast includes Emily Browning as Reggie’s wife Frances, Taron Egerton as Ronald’s sidekick/rumored lover Edward “Mad Teddy” Smith, David Thewlis as the Krays’ business manger Leslie Payne, and Christopher Eccleston as the Krays’ nemesis, Detective Superintendent Leonard "Nipper" Read. Legend premiered locally last during this year's Austin Film Festival and opened Nov. 25 in theaters. In addition to 42 and Legend, Brian Helgeland directed Payback, A Knight’s Tale, and The Order. He also wrote Blood Work, Conspiracy Theory, Green Zone, Man on Fire, Mystic River, and Robin Hood. He also won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for L.A. Confidential.
