"Ahead of the Curve"
Directed by Jen Rainin and Rivkah Beth Medow, the AGLIFF 33: Prism closing film Ahead of the Curve chronicles the publication history of the pioneering lesbian magazine Curve, as well as the life and the career of its founder, Frances “Franco” Stevens. Stevens, who is married to Rainin, launched the magazine in 1990 under its original title of Deneuve. The documentary examines how Curve gave a strong voice to and became a prominent leader among the nation’s lesbian community, survived a lawsuit by actress Catherine Deneuve, and changed ownership following an accident that left Stevens permanently disabled and in constant pain. Ahead of the Curve is available to stream Aug. 15 and 16 during the AGLIFF 33: Prism virtual film festival at (https://watch.eventive.org/agliff/play/5f038a2d66bd9f006f0eecab). There will be a live Q&A at 4 p.m. Aug. 16 with director Jen Rainin, co-director/producer Rivkah Beth Medow, and documentary subject Frances “Franco” Stevens. Ahead of the Curve represents Jen Rainin’s directorial debut. She currently serves as the CEO of the Oakland, CA,-based Kenneth Rainin Foundation, which supports the arts and early childhood education programs. Frances “Franco” Stevens is preparing for the fall launch of The Curve Foundation, which will be dedicated to curating culture for lesbians and queer women.
